Charlemae Hill Rollins Scholarship

1983- Present

The scholarship was started in 1983 and named for Charlemae Hill Rollins, noted children's librarian at the George Cleveland Hall Branch of the Chicago Public Library and author who dedicated her life to providing positive images and stories of African American in children’s books. She was the first African American to receive honorary membership in ALA (18 have been awarded to date), the first African American president of the Association for Library Services to Children (ALSC) and the first African American to chair the Newberry-Caldecott Award Committee. 

Roberta V. Webb, student at the University of Michigan School of Library Science, was awarded the first Charlemae Rollins Scholarship of $300.00, in 1983.
